POKOTABI / Daikoku-ya
大黒屋
Located in Yanaka, Taito Ward, Daikoku-ya is a historic rice cracker specialist hand-grilling senbei over binchotan charcoal, from classic soy sauce to aonori and zarame.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Approaching the shopfront, the comforting aroma of toasted rice dough and brushed soy sauce drifting from the charcoal grill draws you in. Located in Yanaka 1-chome, Daikoku-ya has been crafting rice crackers for more than 100 years. Behind the vintage glass cases, artisans hand-toast each senbei over glowing binchotan charcoal. Turned carefully by hand as the heat is judged by feel, the crackers develop natural, uneven blistering and a rustic character that automated machines cannot replicate.
A natural starting point is the classic charcoal-grilled soy sauce cracker. Made with a firm, traditional core, the rice dough soaks in savory soy glaze, producing an addictive contrast between the crisp, airy bubbles on the surface and the sturdy crunch of the center. Other perennial favorites include aonori (fragrant green laver), sesame that releases warm aromatics as you chew, and edomaki wrapped in crisp nori seaweed, all highlighting the natural flavor of the toasted rice.
Beyond savory varieties, visitors fond of sweet-and-savory snacks will appreciate the zarame and sugar-coated crackers, as well as oversized kaki-no-tane. Choosing favorite flavors from the large glass jars and aged display cases evokes the unhurried charm of shopping in Tokyo's traditional old neighborhoods. Alongside cash, the shop accepts mobile payment services including PayPay and Rakuten Pay, making it an effortless stop for edible souvenirs during a neighborhood stroll.
